So we did it! We took the plunge to bring our family all the way across the Pacific to live in a foreign country. It changes who we are and what we will ever be with every passing day. Let me tell you I appreciate every foreign moment that I have.
The problem is this:
MY OREGON HARVEST IS HAPPENING WITHOUT ME. The smell in the air. The leaves beginning to change color. The fog on the river in the morning. Canning tomatoes and apple pie filling with Dawn. Plum Chutney with Ruthie. Camilla's pork chops and potatoes. Going to Garlands to get all my harvest plants for my front door. Cinderella pumpkins from Davis Family Farms. Gourds. Corn. Martha's Thanksgiving and Halloween magazine. Pumpkin Pie. Apple turn overs and black berry buckle. The pumpkin patch. The corn maze. Pumpkin pie ice cream. The farmer's market. Kettle Corn. Hiking at Bald Hill. Cub foods getting 8 cent a pound pumpkins. Riding bikes on the path to the covered bridge. All the Beaver Believers coming out every weekend and filling the town with the feeling of joy and tradition. And may we never forget a vanilla steamer. So live it up ladies. Love your harvest.
What a wonderful thing to realize all the joy and beauty that is MY harvest in life. These are my traditions.

What a nice tribute that was to Corvallis and Oregon. I miss it too. Feeling a little homesick now...
We get to go back up to Corvallis this weekend. Even though we aren't that far away from the Valley, we still miss it. I didn't really realize what a great town Corvallis was until we left it...
You are right, its starting to happen - even though it has been in the 90's so far this week. I'm going to miss this time of year next year. I'm going to miss the smell of the air at dusk tainted with dust and ripe blackberries and mint fields in the distance. And the smell of the first rain coming. The fog. I'm moving to bright, hot, sunny Bend. Its bright and sunny even when its 20 degrees out. I just don't like it hot or bright and sunny everyday. I'm really going to miss those cozy days when its so cloudy and dark out that you have to turn on the lights inside during the day. Perfect to enjoy hot chocolate and vanilla steamers. There is so much that I'm going to miss....Thank you for showing me to gulp in every last day that I have here in the valley! Loves and hugs, Jessica
The kids and I were talking about Halloween costumes. That made me think of you and how much you love this time of year. Love the tribute. Wish I could find my camera and capture it somewhat for you. Love you guys.
I am so right there with you! Described beautifully! I would just add the Fall Festival...I was just telling a friend today how I love the Fall in Oregon, I am missing it right along with you!!!
I totally know what you are talking about. Every time I go back to Oregon I melt when I smell that smell. I want to bottle it and smell it every time I get home sick. So many AMAZINGLY beautiful things about Oregon that you take for granted when you are living there. I love Corvallis.
I HEART Corvallis (and I just live right down the road).
Amy
Well put Lydia. We really are lucky here. I'll enjoy a few of those on your behalf this year!
Lyd, I am having a "missing my harvest" day today too. Though I am not in a foreign country...I am in Texas which is pretty much a foreign country. It is hot, with no changing leaves, no pumkins to be had, and i am left wanting. Hmmmmm Oregon really is the greatest place on earth.
oh i love it! thank you for reminding me of all the wonderful things here...i will NOT take them for granted this fall.
the air is crisp and cool in the am, and the afternoons are hot.
you can smell autum in the morning.
i can't wait until you are home to enjoy it with us once again:)
love and miss you
I thought of you again last weekend as we drove up to Albany and past the row of lily plants that person has in their yard that you use to pick each year. Thanks for all the great reminders of things we should NEVER take for granted.
Oh and no, we aren't in corvallis yet. Jason is opening his chiropractic clinic in there in January, so we will be moving down there in December. Can't wait!
Mandy
Yes my dear...I miss this very thing!
I love fall too - and no place in the world does fall better than right here in the valley. Even in spite of the rain (which I personally LOVE). Gotta go can something now :)
